A Non-Performing Loan (NPL) is essentially one that is 90 days past due and is deemed unlikely to pay (UTP). Securitisation of NPLs allows banks to transfer the credit risk associated with NPLs to investors and deleverage their exposures. In this pathway, Francesco Dissera delves deep into NPLs and explains their key features before explaining the securitisation process, the types of NPL securitisation and who uses it. Finally he provides a brief overview of bad banks and how they are used to house non-performing assets.
