Payment Rails
Payment rails are the technical networks, protocols, institutions and processes that enable electronic movement of money between payers and payees. This includes the software platforms, clearing and settlement systems, message formats, interbank networks, card schemes, payment service providers, and regulatory and commercial arrangements that together route, authorise, clear and settle transactions—covering real-time payment systems, card networks, Automated Clearing Houses (ACH), and other rails. Payment rails determine speed, cost, reach, interoperability and security of payments and can be owned or operated by banks, private companies, or central banks. They are foundational to commerce because they convert payment instructions into final transfers of value across accounts and jurisdictions.
