What Data Really Is

4 mins 52 secs

Key learning objectives:

  • Understand that data is a simplified representation of reality

  • Recognise how assumptions and proxies shape data

  • Identify the risks of taking data at face value

  • Appreciate the role of judgment in interpreting data

Overview:

Data is not a direct reflection of reality; it is shaped by choices about what to measure, how to measure it, and what to exclude. By the time it is presented, it has been filtered, simplified, and often built on assumptions or proxies. Misinterpretation occurs when these limitations are overlooked. Effective use of data depends on judgment, questioning context, recognising assumptions, and understanding what the data truly represents.

Summary
Why can the same data lead to different decisions?
Outcomes differ because interpretations differ. Some take data at face value, while others question how it was collected and defined. Without understanding context, decisions may be based on incomplete or misleading signals.

What does data actually represent?
Data is a model of reality, shaped by measurement, classification, and transformation. By the time it reaches a dashboard, it reflects a simplified and partial view rather than the full picture.

What are proxies and why do they matter?
Proxies are indirect measures used when something cannot be observed directly. They are useful but risky if treated as exact representations, as they may not fully capture the underlying concept.

What does good data interpretation look like?
It relies on judgment. This means questioning assumptions, recognising limitations, and knowing when data provides meaningful insight versus when it may mislead.
